Are Resumes Outdated?
Posted by Simon Gabay
I’ll be completely honest, I hate reading through resumes, and I dislike the concept and the message it brings across. Resumes are documents meant to demonstrate one’s ability, skills, and past experience. There are books, presentations and workshops built on various theories of how to display those qualities in such a way that you can grab the attention of an employer. Resume’s today became more concentrated on layout, limiting vocabulary and outlandish theories that it completely misses the most important aspect, the individual.
Most would agree that the standard length of a resume should be limited to a page; there were some instances when I received two pages. How is one expected to display their qualities, skills and experience in one to two pages? Check your most recent resume, does your experience section truly reflect what you did at your previous job? In most cases, it shouldn’t. You aren’t writing a paragraph, your displaying 5 bullet points at most. Lets face it, you were probably so caught up in syntax and vocabulary when writing those bullets that you completely limited your experience.
How does your academic section look? Does it truly display what you accomplished and learned in school? I think it’s ridiculous that some employers factor in GPA. Those of us that have been in college are aware of the various professors that we come across. Some professors are easy, some are hard, some give out A’s very easily and some don’t believe in giving A’s at all. In my opinion, School is great but telling me you graduated with an MBA or a BA from some college really doesn’t tell me much.
Resumes are too outdated, and they don’t reflect the real attributes that employers need to see. When I’m speaking to a prospective employee of SocialBrand, I don’t want to see a resume, and I don’t care what school they graduated from or with what GPA, I want to see the individual. I want to know what the individual is about, what they can do, what they have a passion for and how they can contribute. Would you rather hire someone straight out of college with little or no experience or someone who never graduated college but has a passion and believes in what they do and truly has talent. I think the answer is apparent.
I’ll end off with a pretty awesome video that I found floating around:

Dress To Impress or Comfortable Attire?
Posted by Simon Gabay
Why must our clothing dictate who we are? Why must we constantly dress to impress. Growing up I was taught that we had to get a good job which basically entailed wearing a suit and tie. I don’t believe that one must wear a suit and tie to become successful, your attire doesn’t dictate your work, its your skills that do.
I understand that one must present themselves properly to avoid looking like a total mess. I also understand that dressing the part might help one feel the part but is it necessary?
Growing into the person that I am today, I realized that I didn’t want to wear a suit, that isn’t who I am. I slowly began realizing that the notion that only those who wear suits and ties to work are successful is a common misconception. If anything, it took away from who I was. There is nothing worse than trying to act like someone you’re not at work. Doing this will only make one become uncomfortable and essentially blocking them from reaching their true creativity. The work environment should be a comfort zone for everyone.

What is Pleasure?
Posted by Simon Gabay
In order to really understand this, we need to dig down and really find the roots of where our pleasure derives from. I believe that there are two different pleasures in life, long term pleasure and short term pleasure. We’ve all heard the saying, “the best things in life are free”, that’s because they are the most pleasurable. Self exploration, and love would be two great examples of long-term pleasure. It’s pleasure that doesn’t necessarily cost you anything, it lasts a long time and it makes you feel good about yourself.
Short term pleasure, however, has a much shorter duration and lies primarily within materialistic goods. They ultimately make less of an impact on our lives and often result in competition. Phones, Clothing and Food would be great examples of these pleasures. I strongly believe that over time, people tend to focus less on long-term pleasures and find excitement in Short-term pleasures.
Greed plays a big role, subconsciously for the most part, and is taught to us at a young age. We’re taught, through a variety of outlets, that greed is good and exciting. What kind of effect does this have on us? We are never satisfied, and unless we open our eyes, we never will be. Most of us will never be happy because we’re taught to constantly look for something better, something exclusive, something newer. Does that necessarily mean, for example, that your new phone has more functionality than your older model phone? No! Then why upgrade? Because we feel the need to keep up or get left behind!
The article below is a great example. People find more pleasure in top shelf liquor over premium. Why? Because its expensive and exclusive! We need to open our eyes and realize that if we were less (emphasis on less) materialistic in life we would achieve higher levels of happiness.
